Personal reflections on precepts and light

The debate on the precepts last week took up a fair bit of time and mental energy. There was a lot of responding to comments and reading other people's blog posts on the subject, and away from the computer a lot of mental busyness, much of it unproductive. Sitting helps the brain settle of course, and another great resource is going back to Kun Daehaeng's teachings.

In "No River to Cross" she writes about how the precepts are positive aspirations, best realised in the world when you rely upon and entrust everything to Juingong, or Buddha-nature. Entrusting the precepts to your foundation, she teaches, will lead to them being applied naturally in daily life. "Let the precepts, which are already within you", she says, "come out naturally".

My teacher Chong Go Sunim, kindly adding his thoughts to the debate, wrote that "in the end, I suppose it boils down to something the Korean Patriach Hanam said. Everything we do in our daily life has the effect of making our minds and spirits either brighter or darker. Do the things that make your heart brighter, and avoid those that make your heart darker."

I thought about this on Saturday night at the Hanmaum Seonwon, where we had an intimate, lively and positive discussion with Kun Hyaedan Sunim on aspects of chapter two of "No River to Cross", and again the next day at an all-day meditation workshop led by Mike and Helge, two senior assistant teachers from Wat Kow Tahm, at the gloriously beautiful Ariyasom Villa.

The workshop itself was superb, even if for me, unused to such long periods of meditation, rather challenging. But the most difficult part came in the final session when Mike led us through a guided meditation in which we were invited to find times in our lives when we were kind, patient, generous and so on, and to find joy in those examples of our goodness. This was tough.

Pra Pandit, who was also helping out during the day, said how difficult he had found the exercise, and in the short discussion that followed I agreed, describing those few examples of goodness that I was able to find as little more than pinpricks of light in what was otherwise a dark ocean of my rottenness. I wasn't kidding. What I saw in the exercise was far from pretty.

Anyone who knows my history knows how rotten it is. No sooner, as a teenager, had I decided I was no longer a Christian, than I was drinking and fighting and hurting people. I left my first wife a number of times, hurting her badly, and did the same to the girlfriends that came next too. Instead of understanding the treasures I had, I treated people with callousness and cruelty. This pattern continued for years.

So it ought to have been no surprise when, years later, Dao left me and took Joseph. How could I not get back exactly what I'd earlier put out? Of course Karma can't be explained quite so mechanically, but in this case it seems obvious enough. I'd created this. I'd treated people cruelly, acted according only to my own inflated ego, and never considered how I was treating others or even, ultimately, myself.

How could the self-shot arrows of past Karma, of all the time I'd lived without light, not fly back to me? They are certainly still on their way back to me in countless unknown ways right now. As Phra Bhasakorn Bhavilai writes in a little book called 'Karma for Today's Traveler', "Huge, violent, killer waves of our own making are bearing down on us, ready to smash us against the rocks."

But, he writes, "Then, somehow, we see more clearly, we improve ourselves, we reject our past behaviour and we embrace the five precepts. By changing our mental state like that... the power of our bad deeds to effect us has been reduced... The waves will hit us, we can't stop them; but they only take a limb or an eye or some teeth. We are left alive. The five precepts will reduce the negative effects from our past."

The few examples of light I found in my life during that meditation on Sunday, minuscule and hard to find but there, were the light of precepts, those few times when the spirit of the precepts have managed to break through into my life. And since embracing the precepts and entrusting myself to them, and entrusting them to my Buddha-nature, that light has thankfully managed to shine a little more brightly.

I still have a lifetime of bad habits to break. For years I stifled the promptings within me and lived in total disregard to what my inner guide was trying to say, and changing such patterns doesn't happen overnight. But my aspiration now, supported by the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, is to change that. To move from the hungry ghost of my past to the upright stone of my Dharma name and ultimate nature.

Kun Daehaeng Sunim's positive formulation of the precepts are: Love all beings equally and compassionately. Give alms and create virtue. Cultivate a pure and upright body and mind. Speak only the truth and uphold trust. Always maintain bright and upright wisdom. Reaching up from a sea of darkness, this is my aspiration, this the path of light, the working of Buddha-nature. This is what I take refuge in.
